Hi Friends! Iodine is an essential mineral commonly found in various foods and is needed for the production of thyroid hormone. The body does not make iodine, so it is an essential part of your diet. Your thyroid gland uses it to make thyroid hormones, which help control growth, repair damaged cells and support a healthy metabolism. But we need tiny amounts of this trace mineral. If you consume more, it is toxic to you. There are people who make themselves toxic by over consuming iodine. It is easy enough to get it using rock dust or seawater for growing food in your garden. In North America they studied wild animals who eat iodine just like we do and found that only place in North America where animals were deficient in iodine was in midwest. In the midwest where they are growing same cereal grains over and over again, they've completely destroyed the soil. That's what happening. It's called the goiter belt - inland region of the US, encompassing the Great Lakes, Midwest, and intermountain regions, where goiter was once common, as diet was based primarily on foods grown on iodine-depleted soil, which triggered the development of goiter.
