Today, we’re going to talk about the most powerful agent to increase HDL. No medication has been found to increase HDL and improve health. But, there is a natural remedy that can increase HDL and potentially improve your health.

HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein. A lipoprotein is a protein that carries lipids or fats throughout the body. HDL is considered the “good cholesterol.” It removes fat from the cells. This fat is transported to other parts of the body to make certain hormones if needed. It may also be turned into bile or eliminated by the body.

Benefits of HDL:
• It acts as an antioxidant
• It decreases inflammation
• It decreases clotting in the arteries

The most powerful agent to increase HDL is niacin (vitamin B3). Vitamin B3 may significantly reduce atherosclerosis progression and decrease the risk of a cardiovascular event. It’s important to take the type of niacin that creates a flush. The no-flush version won’t create this effect.

Other ways to increase HDL:
• Go on a low carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet (the keto diet)
• Do regular exercise
• Consume fatty fish (or foods high in omega-3 fatty acid)
• Take magnesium
• Do regular intermittent fasting and periodic prolonged fasting
• Stop smoking
• Avoid trans fats
